BOOMER

David Wells boasts he’s the reborn Babe Ruth.
At 6-3, 250, he fits the role.
Crowed on TV he never worked out. Truth
wrenched his back a week later, curbed his stroll
with the Yankees. That was 2003.
But he’s a heavyweight who won’t go down.
Hefts his southpaw curves slow as falling trees.
Break over a foot. Leave mesmerized frowns
on batters’ faces. Served him two decades
in the majors. A hurler worth millions,
he’s near the end now. Arm started to fade
in August, causing the Padres to run
him off. The Dodgers must have sensed some fight
left. Grabbed him. He’s beating the Mets tonight.
