WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES

I gaze back to the ancient Greeks, their tales
of Oceanus, World Ocean—massive
river encircling our earth. Pure blue, pale
green, like your eyes when their irises give
way to dress or sweater’s hue. Goddess eyes
when they reflect window light there by our
table at lunch. Aquamarine, gem prized
by Aphrodite, pendant of power:
her glowing vesica pisces balanced
on her breasts. I find balance within your
eyes—that gentleness when two lovers dance
combined with lightning’s fire—and mother’s pure
joy holding her child by a Christmas tree.
When I look in your eyes, that’s what I see.
