"MISREFLECTED"

For Elizabeth Weber

In her dream, smooth crystal river mirrors
her forest as she always envisioned:
deep veils of emerald, graceful blue scarves
of rare moss, or ghosts perhaps, precision
of rhythm cloaking green hills or curved clefts
nearly hiding glints of distant firelight,
while aqua blue sky holds hints of what’s left
of night. Yet still ghastly before her, fright
of what’s real: Her forest ablaze, flames deep
as lava and melting fluorescent drapes
of leaf-soaked limbs and falling sky. They keep
flowing toward but never reaching this cape
of reflecting calm, as if gods exist
and grasp fate, or simply bless the artist.

CÔTE D’AZUR

We shun golden smiles and tans of tourist
towns and beaches, glide our slender sailboat
past Monaco short of Menton, and twist
our slow way above azure bay on foot
to Grotte du Vallonnet, found by a girl
in ’58 who sought calcite for cheap
jewelry rather than gunsights. Ancient world
of creek and cave opens to room with heaped
pudding walls and sand-sediment flooring.
We gaze and breathe in Jurassic air, sense
growling presence of bear, sharp grating sting
of saber-tooth. Love, we exist in tense
lives a million years past, a million years
hence, don’t we? Melding all laughter and tears?

SMALL VOICE DEEP WITHIN

convincing us of whisper’s vast power
controlling thought’s rhythm, heart’s enthralling
echo, breathing’s payoff, each cleansing hour
keeping us honest. Its quiet calling
endures. So we respond like alert wolves
retreating from its startling sound in fear,
finding where hell really lies, our stark howls
signaling savage lives and stinging tears.
Or we surrender to its subtle song,
our solitary audience plying
respect with mute prayer, patient bows, and long
vigils of silence, faithful hounds lying
in wait for the soft voice to site our place
to paw earth, sniff air, start our sacred chase.

QUEEN OF THE NETHERLANDS

When I come visit you, will you dub me
king, dance for me on Central Park’s great lawn,
your favorite Beethoven symphony
or Chopin étude caressing our dawn
light and us? I’ll humbly study your grace,
our world’s only ballerina, revel
in classic glow of your van Honthorst face
in The Matchmaker. Who knows what level
heaven finds in existence. Can’t it live
here with us? Back home in your living room,
secure in our privacy, will you give
me your lithe arms, wrap me in tender womb
of your caress as we did at the Leap?
Will you dance with me? Let our souls fall deep
until we whirl and meld to one, then sleep?

I’D LIKE TO WRITE YOU ANOTHER SONNET

I’d like to write you another sonnet.
Nothing about liquidity and time,
I suppose, nor even Halley’s comet
and its aphelion. No poem sublime
as Auden meditating on Voltaire,
or Lowell recalling his uncle’s strife.
But something simple as Frost who declares
how a birch can bend like a lean young wife
drying her hair in spring sun. How I can
watch your eyes reflecting light, and yet see
light deeper still within. I’m just a man
with a keyboard and memory: Ay me!
she sighed on her balcony while he gazed
from below, and the glorious night blazed.

SODA CENTRAL

He’s recalling his handy plastic cup
marked Soda Central, a bevy of stamped
22 oz. sentries neatly lined up
as curled gatekeepers among artwork swamped
over the cylinder like curved guitar
strings and Peter Max-style loopings and dots
all in butterscotch-color ink. Dark tar
of tobacco juice would slog from mouth’s slot
down the cup’s length, stain its walls, form a sludge
pool at its base. It’s hard to sense now how
nicotine soothed him, link it to light nudge
of morphine from his epidural, slow
like a dying battery; how lumped chaws
could cost him his sacred tongue and left jaw.

YOU WHO CARRY BEAUTY

You who carry beauty like a poem
whispered in pearl ears of smiling muses,
knowing your gentle phrases can please them
to no end, how each lyric amuses
gods at their leisure like lovely children
dancing deer-grace through their Elysian fields,
dance on. You who carry beauty hidden
even deeper than your sacred face yields,
deeper than your ocean eyes reveal, show
me the way through green valley of your soul.
Guide me at your runner’s pace, vision’s glow
encircling your loping form, calm control
in your joyous song: angel’s clarion.
You who carry beauty, please carry on.
